<p>Like all airlines, our customer has rigorous and robust processes for planning, managing and assuring the maintenance of its fleet, thus ensuring fitness for use whilst minimizing time on the ground (not generating revenue).</p>
<p>The sparse availability of skilled technical labour to complete maintenance tasks has been a challenge in the sector for many years and remains a genuine risk to their commercial objectives. They are therefore constantly looking at new ways to attract, retain and deploy aircraft technicians and engineers.</p>

Challenge

<p>Specifically, we manage a team of 25 aircraft engineers at London Heathrow providing 7 days per week coverage. We manage the station as a package of work (under clients Part 145) ensuring priority defects are cleared within the timescale</p>
<p>Our fixed daily charge is outcome-based and tied to the successful handover of aircraft back into service. We can respond to additional demand by increasing our engineering teams at short notice. Our gain share model is attractive to our skilled workforce because they receive higher remuneration in return for higher productivity targets/KPIs and receive fixed earnings irrespective of how much of their shift they work.</p>

Solution

<p>In the first 6 months, we demonstrated through a shift in accountability, that we could drive our engineering teams to not only complete all tasks in the allocated time but also identify and remedy additional defects. We have since expanded the contract to include additional aircraft and tasking.</p>

<p>For example, when a VIP Boeing Business Jet customer wanted to add a split scimitar winglet modification as a contract variation, we were able to mobilise and deploy our engineering team to carry out the work package. The asset was already in the hangar with its structural integrity compromised due to the stage of the C Check it was at. We therefore had to work with the aircraft in situ, adjacent to other engineering teams and to contractual bound timescales including financial penalties for late delivery.</p>

<p>Our Chief Engineer worked closely with the client Project Manager onsite to define the project brief, work breakdown structure and task for our team of six specialist engineers.</p>
<p>We liaised directly with the aircraft OEM and winglet manufacturer to confirm specifications, technical drawings, and technical instructions, and acquire all parts in time to meet the tight deadline.</p>
<p>Ensuring we had access and adequate space to work on the aircraft alongside other engineering teams involved constant communication, daily stand-ups and progress meetings with the client Project Manager.</p>

<p>We allowed a nine-day window but delivered the project for client sign-off within a total of just seven days. This was achieved through the unique expertise of our high-performing and highly motivated team, and shared objectives with our client to delight their customer.</p>
<p>The aircraft was handed back to the owner on time with the additional works completed &ndash; saving thousands of pounds of cost (and immediate fuel-saving costs) if the winglets had been installed under a separate contract.</p>

Aircraft Modifications/Repairs - Winglets

<p>It&rsquo;s no secret that Carbon60 has been an avid supporter and partner of the military for many years now. <p>That&rsquo;s why for the past six years, we&rsquo;ve been delighted to sponsor the Royal Navy Football Association. And, on March 30<sup>th</sup>&nbsp;an exciting inter-service men&rsquo;s match was hosted between the Royal Navy and the Army.</p>
<p>It&rsquo;s not the first time the two forces have clashed on the football field. In fact, this competition has been an annual sporting tradition between the Army, RAF and Royal Navy for many years now.</p>
<p>During a long history of battling it out on the pitch, it&rsquo;s the Army who have won the most matches, and this most recent clash saw them adding yet another win to the list after beating the Navy in a 2-1 defeat last month.</p>
<p>As sponsors, we&rsquo;re always eager to follow the matches, but with the pandemic having halted the competition in 2020 and 2021, this year&rsquo;s was particularly welcome.</p>
<p>Carbon60&rsquo;s Managing Director, Paul Nolan, commented: &ldquo;Although the game didn&rsquo;t end in the results we would have liked for the Royal Navy team, it was certainly an exciting game demonstrating how far inter-services football has come during our proud period of sponsorship.&rdquo;</p>

<p>June 2024 marked the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, a infamous day when - on 6th June 1944 - the largest amphibious invasion in history took place as part of the first stage of Operation Overlord. The statistics of D-Day and the stories of those involved are staggering. In total the Allies used a flotilla of over 5,000 ships and landing craft to deploy more than 130,000 troops onto the beaches of Northwestern France codenamed Gold, Sword, Juno, Omaha and Utah as part of the efforts to restrict and push back enemy advances across the continent.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As part of the D-Day commemorations, 19 keen cyclists from the Maritime C5ISR Support Unit (MCSU) embarked on an epic crossing of the English Channel, to retrace the route of those brave Servicemen and women in honour of their sacrifice. MCSU has a very specific connection of D-Day, with it&rsquo;s base at the top of Portsdown Hill featuring a glorious view over the Southern Downs and specifically of Southwick House. In 1944, in the months leading up to D-Day, the base became the headquarters of the main allied commanders, including Allied Supreme Commander General Eisenhower, Naval Commander-in-Chief Admiral Ramsay and Army Commander-in-Chief General Montgomery.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The MCSU peloton was made up of a wholeforce mix of military, civil service and industry personnel, which was fitting given the herculean efforts that were required both on the front line and on the home front to ensure the success of the D-Day landings, without doubt one of the biggest and most important events in World War Two. In all, the peloton covered some 270km on a journey that was not only created as a chance to mark the occasion and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but also to allow time for the brave service personnel to connect and reset as a team.</p>

<p>To find out more about such opportunities, and the impact they can have, we spoke with an ex-Navy member who recently joined Carbon60 to hear their story.</p>
<h2>So, tell us a bit about yourself, your background and journey so far</h2>
<p>Growing up as an expat, I was always fascinated by the Armed Forces and particularly the Navy. As I got older, it became an aspiration of mine to join the Navy or at least be in a role associated with supporting the Navy and the incredible things they and their people do.</p>
<p>I finally joined the Navy in 2024, but after I few months I realised that it wasn&rsquo;t quite for me. But this didn&rsquo;t deter me. Soon after leaving the forces, I turned to Carbon60, knowing that they are renowned for helping ex-forces people find exciting new opportunities.</p>
<p>And I am very glad I did, as I have now been working with Carbon60 for just over seven months, in an Administrative Support role for Navy Digital.</p>
<h2>What interested you in joining Carbon 60?</h2>
<p>As already mentioned, I knew that Carbon60 are as passionate about the Armed Forces and Military service people as I am, so their values are very much aligned with mine. This really made them stand out as a company I wanted to be involved with.</p>
<p>Whilst I am no longer in the Navy, I am still keen to be as involved in Navy and Military operations as I can, and thankfully the role Carbon60 found me enables me to be.</p>
<p>I had always heard that being with Carbon60 is a challenge (I love challenges!), but very rewarding too. And everyday is different.</p>
<h2>How was the Recruitment and Onboarding Process?</h2>
<p>The recruitment and onboarding process with Carbon60 was extremely efficient; stress-free, supported and confident building.</p>
<p>I was kept informed of the progression of my application throughout, and I was encouraged to ask any questions that arose, which were promptly answered. I couldn&rsquo;t have asked for much more really!&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Is there anything outside of Carbon60 you are doing, and if so, how is the support you getting?</h2>
<p>One of the best things about working with Carbon60, and being in the role I am in, is that I have been afforded time to study for a part-time Master's degree in Defence Studies alongside my work. What&rsquo;s more, I am in the process of joining the Reserves as well!</p>
<p>I have always received an incredible amount of support from the Carbon60 team, who&rsquo;ve not only allowed me to take such opportunities, but actively engaged with me to offer support and advice along the way too. And they do this for everyone, encouraging people to strive for and achieve their goals.</p>
<h2>Finally, how have you found working with C60?&nbsp;</h2>
<p>I have really enjoyed my time with C60 so far, and I'm looking forward to the years ahead!</p>
<p>The team are all fascinating to talk to, with a lot of them being ex-service personnel too, and if I ever need a hand, I know that there is always a friendly face that I can turn to!</p>
<p>My confidence, skill set and knowledge continues to grow, and I know that this experience will hold me in great stead for my future career journey.&nbsp;</p>

<h1>Meet the Team</h1><p>We're a small but dedicated leadership team who are passionate about high-performing people and products.</p>

<p>Following <a href="https://www.carbon60projectservices.com/blog/sponsorship-spotlight-inter-service-success-for-the-royal-navy-men-s-football-team">their momentous Inter Services trophy win in 2024</a>, their first in 8 years, the <a href="https://www.carbon60projectservices.com/blog/carbon60-proudly-sponsors-the-royal-navy-football-association">Carbon60-sponsored Royal Navy Men&rsquo;s Football Team</a> unfortunately couldn&rsquo;t quite retain their title in 2025, eventually losing out to an inspired British Army side in Portsmouth.</p>
<p>Having kicked-off their title defence with an impressive 3-0 win over their Royal Air Force counterparts, the Navy seniors went into the final against the Army full of confidence and only needing a draw to take the Inter Services trophy back home to HMS Temeraire once again.</p>
<p>The Navy dominated the opening exchanges between the teams, however &ndash; needing a win to become 2025 champions &ndash; the Army side managed to get a grip on the match, and eventually the trophy, winning 3-0 against the pre-championship favourites.</p>
<p>As always, the final &ndash; and whole tournament &ndash; was played in fantastic spirit, with plenty of quality on show too, and showcased the indomitable fight, togetherness and camaraderie of our incredible Armed Forces.</p>

<p>Carbon60 have been avid supporters, sponsors, and partners of the military for many years, and we are proud to be part of the Inter Services story &ndash; in addition to many other military events, celebrations, and occasions.</p>
<p>Win, lose or draw, it is our honour to have our logo afront the shirts worn by the Royal Navy football team, and we would like to congratulate them &ndash; and the Army and RAF teams &ndash; for another incredible Inter Services championship this year.</p>
<p>Whilst the Navy&rsquo;s title defence sadly wasn&rsquo;t meant to be in 2025, we are already looking forward to supporting them in their battle to regain the trophy in 2026.</p>
